The proposition for emigration to America has created the wildest joy among the Jewish population of this place. While no settled organization to assist the Hebrews in their emigration scheme has as yet been perfected, sixty families have nevertheless started on their mission for "the promised land."
They are mostly sturdy, skilled mechanics, and intelligent. When I asked one of them whither they are going, he answered, "We intend to pursue our journey until we make our way to America. There we shall be able to earn a living by our handiwork, and not be subjected to the disgrace and humiliation of being pointed at as a Jew, and at the same time maltreated like dogs."
The enthusiastic emigrants adorned their hats with the American cockade, and on arriving at Giurgovo, they were received by their brethren with a band of music. I am informed that a society has been formed among the laboring men to establish a small fund in aid of the emigrants.
