House Committee Asks Crusade To Remove 'Filth'

WASHINGTON (UPI) - A House post office subcommittee called for a vigorous crusade to keep pornography and other printed filth from falling into the hands of the nation's youth.

In an interim report on use of the mails to purvey obscene matter, the subcommittee, headed by Rep. Kathryn E. Granahan, D-Pa., found a direct connection between the recent increases in juvenile misbehavior and the reading of sordid literature.

"Use of the mails for sending obscene matter has become a national problem of grave consequence," it added.

Mrs. Granahan asserted that a citizens' campaign is needed to once and for all smash the filth purveyors.

"In essence," the subcommittee said, "this pornographic pollution is a local problem of national magnitude" - where federal legislation cannot substitute for parental guidance or absolve parents of the urgent duty of screening what their children read.

The group threw its full support to Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield whose pet hate is mail-order pornography. It emphasized that parents should report receipt of such material to the Post Office Department.

Summerfield has been addressing organizations to muster national indignation behind his private crusade.
