"Bourdeaux, August 27, 1798.
"I think every thing will still be settled, as this Government seems disposed to accommodate matters.
"We have news here from America. to the 12th of July, and I think nothing more will take place until news arrives here from what Mr. Gerry carried out. All the privateers in the West Indies, are absolutely to be called in, as no doubt you will see by the arret of the Directory-and orders are gone out for that purpose. The high Casation Court at Paris, have lately cleared two or three Americans, which I think will stop their taking of those who have proper papers. Those vessels had been condemned in two courts before,
There have been condemned two or three here which I think will be cleared at Paris. A wonderful change! There is one under trial, whose papers are in order, except a certificate that the sugar is not English produce. Brokers are appointed to examine it, and if they report favourably, I think she will be cleared."
