On the 18th of November Morris Kane and Mat Mokler started from El Dorado Canon for Ivanpah, and became lost. Mokler desired to take an old trail, which he was acquainted with, but Kane insisted upon taking a trail they had been told about, which was said to be shorter. During the second day out, while in search of water, they became separated, and were unable to find each other. Mokler wandered about for three days and nights without water at night time going on top of the mountains and building a large fire as a signal, so that if Kane were in the neighborhood he would see it. After wandering around for several days he finally reached Ivanpah, but was unable to learn anything of his partner, as he had not been seen in that section. Mokler then secured the services of an Indian and went in search of Kane, and after a ten-days' hunt was unable to find any trace of him. He desired the Indian to make search in several directions, but the Indian refused, saying there was no water. Mr. Mokler thinks Kane must certainly have perished, as he was on foot and had not a morsel of provisions with him, and had then been without water for two days. When these two men separated, Kane had in his pocket a check for $200 and a silver watch belonging to Mokler, which Mokler had given him to carry, as his own pockets were worn out. Mokler had on his pack-animal a silver brick valued at $60—discount off—which Kane had got at El Dorado Canon in exchange for his horse. Morris Kane is well known in Pioche, having worked for a number of years in our mines and at the mills.
