MR JENKS,
IT was not without a strong feeling of disgust, that I read in two of the Portland papers the proceedings of the town of Buxton. It is to be regretted that sentiments so disgraceful to this district, so decidedly opposite to the independent spirit of American, so disrespectful to the government of our country, and so wretchedly absurd, should have been expressed by men who have the means of information. Inconsiderable as was the number of persons who sanctioned these degrading proceedings, and trifling as they may appear in the public eye, I cannot let them pass, without some comment.
At a time when a lawless and unprovoked nation have set loose their corsairs to depredate upon our commerce—when they infest our own coast, and molest the vessels trading between our own harbour—when they have insulted our nation, and spurned at the most pacific measures that peace and justice could dictate, is it possible that Americans still exist who are so strangely infatuated as to justify this ungenerous conduct, and even to abuse the government they have sworn to maintain?
It should seem that the persons who voted this seditious address, are at least two years behind hand in their politics. What could induce them at this time to come forward with sentiments that single them out as opposers to the very independence of our country? Do they wish to become subjects of the hated Directory of France? If so, let them leave the blessings they are unworthy of, and go serve those demons of democracy, who spread misery and wretchedness wherever their poisonous influence extends. How idle to talk of preserving harmony with the republic of France! But it is curious that these vast politicians, hid among the trees, should remonstrate against arming even our merchantmen, for fear of provoking war! I will not hesitate to say, that war on the part of France has existed against us for more than a year past. But she has not had a favorable moment to declare her impious intentions of subjugation. There is no alternative now left, but to follow the graves of other republics, or to resist with energy. Away then with these foolish prejudices in favor of a nation whose aim is to devour us. Behold the bleeding Cantons of unoffending Switzerland, as an awful proof of French perfidy, and cruelty— For a moment contrast their misery, with the happiness enjoyed under our excellent government, and then say what reason you have thus treasonably to censure it!—Blush at your mistaken politics, and return to the duty of American citizens.

Main Argument
the letter condemns the buxton town's seditious address opposing u.s. measures against french aggression as treasonous and outdated, arguing that france is already at war with america and citizens must resist to preserve independence rather than support the french directory.
