THE TARIFF BILL.

On motion of Mr. Mallary the House then went into Committee of the Whole on the state of the Union, Mr. Dwight, of Massachusetts in the Chair. (Mr. Barbour of Virginia, having requested to be excused) and took up the Tariff Bill.

Mr. Hoffman then took the floor, and went at large into a defence of the bill, as reported by the committee, and in opposition to the amendment of Mr. Mallary. He continued his remarks till half past five o'clock when he yielded to a motion that the committee rise.

It rose accordingly and thereupon

The House adjourned.
