EXCURSIONS TO THE BOAT RACE.
For hundreds of miles around this city the fever to witness the great boat race is permeating, and numerous excursions, by land and water by car and boat, are being planned to visit this city and see Hanlan and Courtney in their great oar contest.
There will be excursions from New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Newark, Trenton and Wilmington on the New York line; from Harrisburg, York and other points on the Northern Central railroad; from towns on the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, from Richmond, via Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac railroad and the Orange & Manassas Gap railroad; from Norfolk, by the Inland and Seaboard Coasting company’s steamers; from Leonardtown, Westmoreland, King George and other points on the Potomac by the steamer John W. Thompson, and, in fact, from everywhere—towns, villages and cities—contiguous to this city. Sixteen car loads of passengers for Washington left Toronto, Canada, on Sunday night, and it is estimated that at least 7,000 persons will come here from Baltimore. From present appearances 20,000 will be the number of people which will be added to our population tomorrow, and the ability of this city to take care of them will be severely tested.
