RAPE BY
RED ARMY
Austrians Told Difference
Between Germans
and Russians
By MAURICE MORAN
VIENNA, Aug. 7.-An official of the provisional Austrian government said today he had protested rape by Red Army troops in their victorious sweep across Austria and was told: "Our troops are different from the S. S. They raped your women and killed them. We don't kill your women."
The official commented: "That's true-they don't kill our women."
The official said the Russians, entering a country which spoke the same language as the Germans, naturally felt a desire for revenge against the people and this was strengthened by the fact several divisions of Austrian troops fought alongside the Germans on the Eastern Front.
Viennese say pillaging and looting of homes of furniture and removal of wrist watches and jewelry still goes on, but on a much smaller scale. Here again the Viennese—who seem bluntly honest in reference to general acceptance of Nazism in the early days of the Anschluss—appear resigned in the belief the Russians are only exacting a sort of "reparations in kind" for the vast destruction wrought on their homes by the Germans.
