MONROVIA, Liberia - (ANP)- Liberian President William V. S. Tubman, in a major foreign policy address, has declared that the Liberian government "irrevocably and wholeheartedly" identifies herself with the free nations of the world.
Speaking at a dinner meeting in his and Mrs. Tubman's honor, Tubman told members of a diplomatic corps and legislature:
"Our friendship and historic connections with the United States, the leader of the free world, is older than the Republic of Liberia itself" and nothing can "deter us from our firm resolve to continue to maintain this position and strengthen the bold ties of long and lasting friendship."
The Liberian president made an obvious reference to Russia's offer of economic aid, saying:
"This nation has never been for sale: neither will the Liberian people ever barter their integrity. We shall not go around with hat in hand begging. On the contrary, we shall pursue the path of honest industry in our endeavor to develop ourselves."
Tubman expressed hope that Liberia will continue to be attractive to capital from the United States and other friendly nations within the free world.
"It is my conviction that if we apply a fresh resolve and strive for those honest and honorable aims, we can merit the right to hope for and expect some measure of success in the achievement of the goals we have set," he said.
