On the 1st instant, the republicans made a general attack. The action was very bloody, and lasted till night. The enemy, it was thought, were completely routed; but on the following day they re-appeared with fresh troops, and renewed the attack with greater fury than before. After repeated efforts to break our ranks and push forwards, they were again repulsed with the loss of 7 cannon. Gen. Keglevick was killed by a cannon ball. The Duke de Bourbon, who with the Duke d'Enghien, his son, at the head of a column of horse, charged the enemy, was wounded in the hand: and Duke d'Enghien surrounded and a prisoner for a short time. As the Carmagnoles directed their main attack against the division of Conde with a force greatly superior, this corps was obliged to fall back; but having received sufficient reinforcements, the Prince of Conde dismounted, and marching sword in hand at the head of the infantry, fell upon the enemy, routed them, delivered his grandson, and took 5 pieces of cannon. The patriots retreated towards Strasbourg.
