Full Text

Only 30, Yet Married Four Wives.

Paulis F. Hicks, a colored preacher, is at present in Raymond street jail, Brooklyn, awaiting trial on a charge of bigamy. He was arrested on Wednesday on Coney Island, where it is said he has been turning the heads of the marriageable colored women. The flock over which he was the spiritual guide in Rhode Island became divided, and he selected Coney Island as a mission field. Finding that there were already more colored clergymen there than could find employment he hired himself to a hotel keeper named Schurig, on the boulevard.

Hicks is over six feet in height, light complexioned, and, although only 30 years of age, is said to have four wives already.

Hicks was married on Tuesday evening to a young colored woman named Jennie Johnson, whose acquaintance he made at Coney Island. On Wednesday the wife he left behind him in Rhode Island traced him to Coney Island, and, hearing what had taken place the previous evening, had him arrested.
