John Beaucleugh, known here on account of having long been connected with McMahan's circus, and John Buckley, a Rock Island news agent, were arrested Sunday night by Officers Fox and A. M. Sutton on the charge of having swindled F. Adler of El Reno out of $150 by the time-worn check racket in Caldwell last week.
It is alleged that Beaucleugh and Buckley met Adler on a Rock Island train and entered into conversation with him. They represented to him that they also were going to El Reno to take charge of a stock of goods. It is said that they represented to Adler that they would arrive after the closing of the banks and requested him to loan them $150 on a check, so that they could pay their freight and get their goods out of the depot at once.
It is understood that they gave him a check of $20, which they told him to hold until the next day, and then they would go together to the bank, have it cashed, and Adler would be paid back his money and be recompensed for his trouble. Adler, it seems, consented, and gave the men the money. It is claimed that when the train reached Caldwell they gave him the slip. He soon found that he had been swindled and notified Sheriff Shawver. The case was put in the hands of Detective Woods of the Rock Island, who caused the arrest of the two men. Sheriff Shawver arrived last evening with a warrant for the men, and will take them back to Caldwell this morning.
