WINCHESTER AND ALABAMA RAILROAD—AN EFFORT IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
At a meeting of the Directors of the Winchester and Alabama Railroad Company in Winchester, on Tuesday Inst, a resolution was adopted unanimously, that the Company would immediately take steps to continue the road through Alabama to the Tennessee River. We are rejoiced at this. We have from the first favored this project, and now look with certainty to its early completion. This is the only remaining link which, when completed, will give to the people of this section and a large portion of Middle Tennessee and North Alabama access to the entire South.
It will open up avenues of trade and travel to Central and South Alabama, which to Middle Tennessee and North Alabama is now comparatively inaccessible.
Middle Tennessee and a large portion of North Alabama are grain and stock growing regions. Central and South Alabama are rich cotton-planting districts and are and will be consumers of the products of Middle Tennessee and North Alabama. We hope the people of Madison county will respond to propositions connected with this enterprize, in a manner worthy of their well-known energy and liberality.
Our fellow-townsman, Hugh Francis, Esq, is the soliciting agent appointed by the Board to obtain subscriptions of stock, and his well known energy and devotion to enterprizes of this character are omens of success. We bespeak for him that kindly reception which the importance of his work demands at the hands of those interested.
He is no novice in this business and the friends of the enterprize may rest satisfied that success will crown his effort.
We shall present more of this subject in the future.
JOHN A. McEWEN.
