Full Text

Our town has, for a few days, been a scene of uncommon bustle of business, in consequence of the intelligence from Congress, that an Embargo was immediately to be laid. The storm of wind and rain on Friday, or yesterday, though Sunday, stopped the loading and dispatching vessels. If the Embargo Law does not reach this place by Saturday, there will nothing be left here to embargo.

It is curious, that although the general impression is, that this proposed embargo will be directed against Great-Britain, and preparatory to a war, yet people of all parties are sending their property to British ports, and ports from which our vessels can never return, if we do make war upon Great-Britain; such as those of Spain and Portugal.— Wise legislators might draw more information from this than will be found in the speculations of insulated or philosophic statesmen.
