Distressing effects of the late gale

From a gentleman who arrived in town on Monday last from Currituck, we learn the following disastrous intelligence:

The schrs. Ganges, Ketchum; Speculator, Bishop; and Consolation, Terry, from N. York, bound to Currituck, and the sloop Rachael & Betsy, Nicholls, from Philadelphia, bound to this port, arrived off Currituck Inlet on Wednesday last, the wind at the time blowing a heavy gale from N. E. The Ganges, in her attempt to run in, got ashore on the bar, and, in her pitching with a tremendous sea, carried away first her bow-sprit, then her mainmast, and finally upset: Captain K. his brother and a seaman named Wm. Osborne, were the only persons composing the crew, a lad who belonged to the vessel having been previously washed overboard : they succeeded in getting on the bottom of the vessel, but in a little time Osborne was dashed off by a wave and perished; and soon after another sea swept the Captain's brother from the wreck, but he was caught by Capt. K. and rescued for the moment from a watery grave, though so much exhausted that he could no longer bear up against the fury of the waves, and shortly after perished in his brother's arms. Capt. Ketchum clung to the wreck until it drifted ashore on the south point of the Inlet, from which perilous situation he was relieved by some of the inhabitants who humanely went to his assistance.

The Speculator, in attempting to fetch in, carried away her main boom, and run ashore on the south side of the Inlet without any material injury, and will probably be got off.

The Rachael and Betsy, as before observed, was bound to this port, but being driven to the southward of the Capes, endeavored to put into Currituck for a harbor, and was driven by the force of the gale upon the South Shoals, where she got aground and now remains about two hundred yards distance from her requisite depth of water ; it is expected, however, that she will be got off again without damage.

The Consolation got in safe.

Since writing the above we have received intelligence stating that the packet schooner Tell-Tale, Capt. Churchward, from New York for this port, with a cargo of merchandize, &c. was stranded on Body's Island, on Thursday evening last. The Tell-Tale sailed from New York on Tuesday last, and was 60 hours out when she went ashore. The passengers, (14 in number) the Captain and crew, were all saved; the principal part of the cargo had been safely landed, and our informant is of opinion that the vessel may be got off again. Mr. Tisdale and Mrs. Simington, who were passengers in the Tell-Tale, arrived in town yesterday.
