Corporal George E. Thurston of the 1279th Engineer Combat Battalion attached to the famed 1st Division of World War II has recently arrived in France. He will be stationed in Munich Germany, and will serve a tour of duty from 18 to 22 months in Europe.
Corporal Thurston enlisted in the Army in April of 1950 and completed 14 weeks basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky the following July. He then went to Camp Stoneman, California expecting to be sent to Korea but was not, and later served at Camp Roberts, California training machine gunners. In April 1951 Thurston left Camp Roberts with the 140th Engineer Combat Battalion of Detroit Michigan, and in June they departed for Camp Kilmer, New Jersey for overseas duty.
Corporal Thurston is a Specialist in the field of Administration, and was recently appointed Chief Technician for his outfit in this field. He also serves on the battalion newspaper as reporter and artist. He was awarded a High school diploma in June 1951 from the Armed Forces school in Chicago. He graduated 14th in his class with honors.
Corporal Thurston is the nephew of Frank G. Thurston of 702 Iglehart in St. Paul.
