By the direction of the President of the United States, the Secretary of State has sent letters to the District Attorneys of Vermont and New York, requesting their earnest attention to all movements of a hostile character, contemplated or attempted by the citizens of their districts, and to prosecute without discrimination, all violaters of the laws of this country, which have been enacted to preserve peace with foreign powers, and to fulfil all the obligations of our treaties with them. A circular letter has also been addressed by the Secretary of the Treasury to each of the collectors of the customs of the United States, bordering on the Canadian frontiers, requiring them and their officers to cooperate with the District Attorneys, and other United States officers, in all legal modes for the preservation of the neutrality of the Government and people of this country during the disturbances in Canada.
