Full Text

Extract of a letter from Paris, Nov. 1.

"The Archbishop of Sens was some few days ago on the point of being placed far beyond the resentment of the nation, and out of the reach of the Attorney-general and Parliament, It was not a Cardinal's Hat, or a Royal Noli Prosequi that had like to have produced such effects; it was the hand of death that was on the point of snatching from the Parliament their victim. The Prelate was at Brienne, the seat of his brother, from which that nobleman derives his title of Count Brienne. Across the chimney of the room in which the Archbishop lay, ran a beam, which served also as a prop to the chimney of the adjoining apartment in which a fire was constantly kept--several faggots and billets of wood having been put on, raised the blaze so high, that it reached the beam, and set fire to it: the flames, unperceived in the night, gained ground, and directed by the beam, at last reached his Grace's apartments: it was with difficulty he found means to escape, half suffocated, in his shirt. Several fine paintings, and other valuable effects were destroyed; but through the activity of a numerous family of servants, the fire was got under, before it had reached a third apartment. The Count de Brienne immediately waited upon his brother to congratulate him on his escape; he then took a tender leave of him, and returned to Paris: the Archbishop is probably by this time beyond the boundaries of the French dominions. His departure from Brienne was fixed for the 28th of October: his destination for Italy: but, as he had reason to apprehend the violence of the people of Burgundy, and other provinces lying in the direct road from Brienne to Italy, it was thought he would take his way through Flanders, the Parliament of that province not having been included in the severities exercised on the other Parliaments of the kingdom: from Flanders he will pass into Germany, and so through the Tyrolese into Italy."

The Archbishop of Sens, facing resentment from the nation and Parliament, nearly died in a fire at Brienne, his brother Count de Brienne's seat, caused by a chimney beam igniting from an adjacent fire. He escaped half-suffocated in his shirt. The fire was contained before spreading further. He planned to depart for Italy on October 28 via Flanders and Germany to evade hostility in Burgundy and other provinces.
