Full Text

It is stated in the Baltimore American, that a little before dark one evening last week, a merchant in Howard street closed his store, but about an hour afterwards his clerk, happening to walk by it, thought he perceived the door open, which on examination he found was actually the case. Suspecting that someone had improperly gained admittance he brought a neighbor to watch at the door while he entered to make a search. After the young man had been in a few moments, a very stout black fellow came out and was collared by the gentleman who was stationed at the door.— The black, being too strong for his opponent, broke away from him and made his escape, having had one side of his waistcoat torn off. In examining what depredations had been committed in the store, it was found that the thief had stolen a sum of money in bank notes, a pocket book and a bank book—all of which he had put into his waistcoat pocket, and which luckily for the owner, happened to be on the side torn from the thief in the scuffle at the store door and left behind.
