Two Escapees. One Wounded. Still At Large

MERIDIAN — Two Negroes who escaped the Lauderdale County stockade Monday night were still free Wednesday, though one of them is known to be wounded.

Walter Whitehead, 24, was shot by Sumter county, Ala., Deputy Melvin Stevens while making his escape from a house where five other escapees were arrested Tuesday. Whitehead was shot with a light shotgun and is not believed to be badly hurt.

The other Negro still on the loose is Willie Jackson, 24, the only one of seven escapees who took his chances alone. He is known to have returned to Meridian, but deputies have been unable to track him further.
