Full Text

No apology will be deemed necessary by our readers for occupying so large a space as we have in this and our preceding number, with the publication of Mr Sparks' interesting letters on the subject of the " Washington Papers." It is a matter which comes home to men's business and bosoms" and the facts thus far developed by Mr Sparks, in relation to the subject, most clearly evince, that however deservedly great may have been the admiration of the people for the character of Washington, as manifested in the field and in the cabinet, it will be even augmented by a consideration of his systematic industry, untiring zeal, and unwearied exertions for his country's good, in the more private walks of life.

The proposed work, under the judicious compilation of the editor, will be a vast accession to the literary and political annals of our country—and add one more, and a most signally triumphant one, to the many conclusive refutations of the cynical sneer which has reached us from the other side of the Atlantic—“ Who reads an AMERICAN BOOK ?"
