THE END OF EUROPE'S STONE AGE

WE ARE now about to say good-by to the Stone Age in Europe. For several months you have been reading about the people of that early time, and if it has been as much fun for you to read as for me to write, you have enjoyed yourself indeed.

Let us take just one more glance at Stone Age Europe.

Here and there was a little patch of waving grain, planted in the spring by villagers. To get the ground ready, sharp stones or hooked sticks had been used. Stone tools and weapons were still common. Pots and dishes of clay were made in all parts of Europe. The clay work was sometimes very fine. Pictures and designs were sometimes placed on pottery.

Strange people-the dolmen builders-had come to Europe and had villages in many spots. The huge tombs they built are among the wonders of the Late Stone Age. The dolmen-builders, however, seem to have had little real sense. Otherwise they wouldn't have spent so much time and effort on tombs.

Great numbers of persons were living in villages. Around some villages were mounds of earth or stone walls. Others were built on platforms over lakes. Herds of cattle and flocks of sheep grazed near many of the villages. Dogs, horses, pigs and goats were also among the animals which have been tamed. A scene at the entrance to a walled town of the Late Stone Age as imagined by a modern artist. The animals are being driven within the walls so no harm will come to them during the night.
