Lodge, now 71
has been in

tempted to steer the party's Senatorial
craft, but without distinguished success.

cooks spoil the broth,

Among his soonest shipmates who
will be in line for the
leadership when Lodge resigns,
Jim Watson of Indiana probably comes
first.
Personally, Watson is popular. Politically his ambition.
He would like
the helm. He knows the ropes in
Washington and
what port it
would make.
After four
years as Senate leader, Jim
is confident
with the astute
being safe and sane conservative, detachable, high protectionist candidate for
president in '28.
But Jim's aggressive receptivity is
rather frowned on by the members who
think he's perhaps as much a party ex
tremist in a stand-pat way, as Brookhart or Borah aggressively.
They feel that someone more lettered, diplomat and would go further with fewer
fights than would Watson. They're
not sure he built defeat away from Watson's an alliance
with [? ].
Wadsworth: they might do
worse. Another likable personality
but without much force.
And a real boatswain's mate with a leaning pin when needed.
