The Only Party Capable of Carrying on the War.
The Vallandigham address, which is sustained by the straight Democracy, says that the Democratic party is "the only party capable of carrying on the war, and the only party which has ever conducted a war to a successful issue."
If these are facts they point unmistakably to the success of the rebellion, and our people may as well prepare their necks for the yoke of Davis & Co. Because the Democratic party is now conducting the war which is waged against the Union.
Jeff. Davis, the President of the Rebel Government, was, a little over a year ago, one of the most trusted of the Democratic leaders. Vice-President Stephens was one of the men in the House that was voting with Cox and Vallandigham to prevent the organization of the last House: John C. Breckenridge, the candidate of the unquestioned and unquestionable Democracy, is now a General in the army of "the only party capable of carrying on the war;" of the sixteen Democratic Governors in power a year ago, thirteen [all but three] are now in open rebellion, and helping the Democratic party to conduct this war. Of the thirty-seven Democratic Senators, 24 [two thirds] are now sitting in the rebel Congress, or engaged in one way or another in conducting this Democratic war; of the Democratic members of the last congress, more than two thirds are in arms against the Union.
In the Senate and in the House, the men who were chairmen of the leading committees, the men that were trusted and honored most by the Democratic party, are nearly all fighting in this war on the side of the rebels; in short, if the Democratic party is the only party that is capable of carrying on a war, and the only party that can give success to the war we are "gone up." All the great financiers of the party, the Cobbs, the Floyds, and the Thompsons, are in the ranks of the rebels, and if it is vain to expect anything like soundness, or economy or uprightness outside of such a pure, honest, and scrupulous party as that which writes its financial success on Confederate bonds, and tells its military victories by the word "skedaddle," woe, woe, woe, is our poor country.
