WHAT AUSTIN NEEDS.
The Gospel of Christ Exemplified in the
Life of the Unbeliever.
This will cure every moral evil. It will
hold back the young from temptation; it
will keep the tippler out of the saloon
and from his bottle at home; it will dry
up the foul stains of tobacco on our
walks and in the church: it will cause the
smoker to give up his pipe, and quench
the fire from the rolled leaf on our streets.
It will so stir the public conscience that
no saloon or gambling place will be al-
lowed their corrupting influence within
the limits of our city. The Gospel, where
allowed to be the power of God, will make
happy homes and bring peace and pros-
perity to families; it will restrain men
from over-reaching in trade; will check
all deceit and make men strictly honest.
Knowing that the Gospel alone can do
this, some of our people are agitating the
question of a Young Men's Christian As-
sociation-undenominational- designed
for the public good. Some such organiza-
tion we greatly need. Let some young
man, profoundly Christian in character,
wide-awake. gifted with the power of
push and trained in Christian work. be in-
duced to come and work with us, aided
by the fellowship of our churches and sus-
tained by the material help of the public.
Our city would be greatly benefitted by
such an enterprise. Shall we have it?
Let our pastors take the matter in hand
without delay and bring it before the
people and let them decide what they
will do.
With our late investments of capital.
enlargement of business and increase of
population, let Austin come to the front
in the most important of all her public
interests.
