Whigs of Vermont!
On the 7th of November, you will be called on to aid in fixing the political character of the National Administration for long years to come. The period is near at hand;—the results it will determine are mighty. The great issue is between TAYLOR and CASS. They are politically wide as the poles asunder. One of them must be elected. Any other expectation is too idle for serious consideration.
Sustain Gen. TAYLOR, and you sustain, as you have always done, the true AMERICAN Policy:—let Gen. Cass be elected and a Domestic and Foreign Policy, destructive of the prosperity and dangerous to the perpetuity of the Union, will have received a sanction that will immensely aggravate its evils.
Sustain Gen. TAYLOR, and you aid in giving to the Cause of FREEDOM and AMERICAN INDUSTRY, at the head of the Senate of the United States, the author and powerful defender of the American Tariff of 1842, MILLARD FILLMORE, of New York;—let Gen. Cass be elected, and the cause of Slavery Extension and Free Trade will be furnished, in the same exalted and responsible station, with a vigilant and powerful advocate in WM. O. BUTLER, of Kentucky.
Gen. TAYLOR is a sound, noble-hearted, conservative Whig: Gen. Cass is the embodiment of the worst features of modern 'democracy.' The former has no enemies to punish, nothing to serve but his Country;—the latter has no friends but partisans, nothing to serve but his party. Choose ye!
Your Electoral Ticket is before you. It is composed of men who never abused your confidence, who are incapable of compromising the true interests of the State and the Country. You can elect them by a majority never surpassed in Vermont. WILL YOU DO IT?
Whigs of Vermont! Your State Committee do not wish to disguise the deep interest they feel in the result of your action on the great issue presented. They are impelled no less by their alarm at the consequences that might follow a neglect of your duty, as Freemen at the Ballot Box, than by the just renown for political stability and integrity which your inflexible adherence to the Public Principles and the noble Men of the Whig Party has shed upon our State, to urge you to the Polls. Vermont expects every Whig to do his duty!
