Destruction Ordered Because of Foot and Mouth Disease.
The menace of death today for the Hartsook Holstein dairy herd at Lankersheim, near Los Angeles, California, which, despite every precaution, has contracted the foot and mouth disease, brings the dairying industry of the country face to face with the greatest individual loss in its history, says a dispatch of Thursday.
The herd, including Tillie Alcastra the world's greatest milch cow, is said to be the most valuable in its class in the world. Destruction of the animals has been set for today, though experts are seeking a way to save the cattle.
Besides the famous Tillie, said to be the only cow that ever "put up" at the first-class hotels of the country and who has been valued at $50,000, the herd includes the following champion shin animals:
Bessie Snowball De Kol, famous 1,000-pound fat producer; Aagie De Kol Mead, a bull valued at $27,500; Sir Pietertie Ormsby, Mercedes 37th the world's record heifers; Miss Aagie Ormsby Segis and Rosamaines Korndyke Beauty, the state record cows; Norma Korndyke Cornucopia, Carrie Tritomia Ormsby, Eva Hubbavale and a long list of 1,000 pound yearly butter record cows.
