OLYMPIC STADIUM, LOS ANGELES, Cal., July 31.-America's best bets in the events of the 10th Olympiad which opened here yesterday in ultra splendor, with a grand parade and speech making by Vice President Curtis; the conquerors of the mighty Wykoff Toppino and Kiesel, none other than our own Ralph Metcalfe, Marquette University flyer and Eddie Tolan are destined to take an international step today toward universal acclaim as the world's fastest humans.
Metcalfe, Tolan, Favorites
After the parade and official opening of the carnival Saturday, a few weight lifting events occupied the remainder of the evening, but today the program takes on a serious aspect offering thrills for the 100,000 expected fans in the first and semi-final trials of the 100-meter dash, with Metcalfe reigning as favorite and Tolan as a runner-up; first and semi-final trials in the 400-meter hurdles; first trials in the 800-meter run, which features Phil Edwards, former N. Y. U. star, now running under the colors of Canada; the high jump, in which we find Cornelius Johnson, Los Angeles High School lad, who surprised America when he tied for first place at Palo Alto trials along with George Spitz, N. Y. A. C. and Robert Osgood, of Southern California, with a leap of 6 feet 6 5/8 inches breaking the previous Olympic record of 6 feet 6 inches; the shot put; 10,000 meter run finals; javelin finals for women; fencing and other weight lifting events will top the program.
Boys in Great Condition
All members of the American team are showing good condition on the eve of this great event and it is generally expressed that the American boys will come through strongly. With these tabs now completed we now anxiously await the grand hullabaloo which will follow the brilliant showing doped for today.
