Painful Accident

Ed. Hayes, who drives team on the city scraper, met with a peculiar and painful, although probably not serious accident in John Wood's blacksmith shop Wednesday evening, due to the viciousness of one of the horses he drives, and which he had taken to the shop to be shod. The horse is one of the worst known to local blacksmiths, and after the shoes had been fastened to the animal's front hoofs, it was necessary to the safety of the man who worked behind him, in attempting to shoe the back hoofs, to tie his front legs. While this attempt was being made, the animal reared and came down on Hayes' feet, one of the calks being driven through his boot and deep into the man's foot. Hayes, in his struggle, fell down and lay prostrate and writhing with pain, while the horse seemed, wickedly, to realize its advantage, and could not be induced to move for several minutes. Extreme measures finally persuaded the beast to release Hayes. The driver has a very sore foot and will be unable to walk without a limp for some days.
