—Last Sunday afternoon three tenement houses on Hill street were burned to the ground. Two of the houses belonged to Senator John Walter Smith and one to Hon. George. W. Covington. All three houses were tenanted by colored people. The fire originated from a defective flue in one of the houses and as the wind was blowing a gale it did not take long for the other two to catch. The house belonging to Mr. Covington had somewhat of a history. For many years prior to the erection of Makemie Memorial Presbyterian Church, (the present new structure) the burned building stood in one corner of the churchyard and was used as a 'lecture room,' Sunday School room, etc. Many prominent men of the county and the state went to Sunday School in the little old building. among the number being Hons. John Walter Smith. John P. Moore. Francis E. Waters, Marion T. Hargis. and others.
