ALGIERS, June 19.

The regency of Algiers is, as may well be expected, become more difficult to deal with since their accommodation with Spain : that nation being the nearest, furnished great business for their corsairs, but now being deprived of that easy and daily opportunity of making prizes, they redouble their forces to prey upon other nations. On the 26th of last month, 11 corsairs sailed from our port ; one of which was a chebec of 34 guns, one of 24, &c. all these sailed for the coast of Italy. The Dutch are in high esteem with the Algerines, and so are the Danes, both by the means of the considerable presents they make annually to the Dey : the vessel with the Danish presents arrived lately ; they consist of powder, balls, ship-building timber, cordage, sails, and every thing necessary for the fitting out of the Algerine navy ; some of the ammunition has been landed, and among the rest 780 barrels of powder. These presents are better calculated to satisfy our regency, than those offered by the Venetians last month, which consists of 1200 sequins in specie, a gold repeating watch and chain, richly set in diamonds ; a very rich ring, a caftan, and several pieces of rich stuff, &c. the Venetian Consul however was hardly returned to his house, from presenting the above, before the Dey sent all the presents back, except the sequins, which he keeps ; he at the same time sent a messenger to let the Consul know that those were not such presents as he could accept : that he would give him two months to procure more acceptable ones, which time expired, he should know what part to act towards the republic. All the ministers and courtiers followed the example of the Dey, and sent back to the Consul the presents they had received ; but the term of two months being too little for the Consul to receive fresh instructions from his Court, he is in much embarrassment ; he is in the mean time pretty well apprised that the Dey not only wants the Venetians to furnish him with arms and ammunition, but he also demands payment of the value of a vessel, loaded with linen, from the coast of Bougie, which the Chevalier Emo took last year on the coast of Tunis; two Jews who were on board were killed in the engagement, and for their loss the Dey demands 2000 sequins. The Dey has also summoned the Ragusan agent to come before him, whom he ordered to inform the Senate of that Republic, that he required them to send presents as other nations do, in default of which he would declare war against them.
