Full Text
The Jackson County Era has put on its war paint and comes out in opposition to Mr. Hayes' southern policy. The Era, in reprinting a lengthy article from the Chicago Inter-Ocean, prefaces it with the following remarks: Since President Hayes has proved recreant to the trusts reposed in him by the great loyal part of the country, we deem it our duty to express words of disagreement with his public policy. We consider the acts of the president, since his inaugural, in direct conflict with the principles enunciated in the platform upon which he accepted the nomination, and made his canvass before the people, and we can assure his highness that the party who elected him are not at all in harmony with his policy toward the union men of the south. It is amusing to notice how 'the great loyal part of the country,' which means the Republican party, squirms at the acts of their own president. Though the course Mr. Hayes has taken may be 'in direct conflict with the principles enunciated in the platform upon which he accepted the nomination' of the Cincinnati convention, it is good enough for Democrats, and a thousand times better than they anticipated from a Radical president.
