An abstract of European news, in addition to that under our foreign heads.

It had been discovered that the king had borrowed immense sums of money to support his rebel brothers and their criminal adherents: above 20 bankers in Paris, it was expected would fail in consequence; the king's debts amounting to at least 120000 livres. Upwards of two thousand men were employed in fortifying the tower of the temple where the king is confined. General de la Fayette had prevailed on a very small part of his army to swear not to abandon him or the king—on the 22d. of August a member of the National Assembly proposed, that as the greater part of the English prints appeared to be hired by the court party to blacken and vilify the French revolution, that therefore "a fraternal address should be sent to the British nation, discovering the whole conspiracy of the traitor Louis the 16th, and all the outrages that caused the insurrection on the 10th of August; and that the said address be particularly transmitted to all the popular societies in Britain and Ireland with a request to have it reprinted and circulated through the British empire. This, it was thought too, would contribute greatly to eradicating aristocracy and Royalty from England, and hasten the grand revolution of Europe." The proposition was unanimously adopted. The family of Gen. Fayette had embarked privately for England at Havre, and arrived there safe. Almost all the towns in France of any consequence had expressed their entire approbation of the proceedings of the National assembly, and the armies of the nation, except a very few retainers to Fayette and the king, were unanimous and determined on the side of the people. No doubt remained of Fayette's treachery, who was in fact holding a correspondence with the king to introduce the Austrian and Prussian armies into the heart of the kingdom—France, was now in effect no other than an immense republic, royalty execrated throughout, and the great body of the people unanimous in putting a final conclusion to the reign of kings in that country, and supporting the cause of liberty to the last drop of their blood.
