A published letter from Congressman Brent from Louisiana states that in 1825, before the Speaker election, Mr. Stevenson warned that votes for him should not expect his support for the Administration, contradicting Mr. Sloane's assertion and suggesting Sloane misapprehended the conversation, supported only by Mr. Whitlesey.

Full Text

Mr. Rezakiah Stevenson has published a letter from Mr. Brent member of Congress from Louisiana, and a friend to the Administration, stating that in 1825, previous to the choice of Speaker, Mr. Stevenson declared to Mr. Brent that the friends of the Administration, if any of them gave their votes to him, must not calculate upon his supporting the Administration. Mr. Brent understood from Mr. Stevenson at the time, as Mr. Stevenson now responds upon the charge made against him by Mr. Sloane, unless we are to infer that he held a directly opposite conversation with Mr. Brent and Mr. Sloane, at the same period, Mr. Sloane's assertion is only supported by his colleague, Mr. Whitlesey, to whom the former related the conversation with Mr. Stevenson on the day it is said to have happened. The probability is, Mr. Sloane misapprehended Mr. Stevenson.
