RAPS SECRECY
GOP Candidate Says No One Knows How Deeply President Has Involved U. S.
Milwaukee, Wis., Oct. 6.—Gov. John W. Bricker, assailing "government by secrecy," declared tonight that "no one knows how deeply the President of the United States has involved us in secret agreements."
The national administration, said the Republican candidate for vice-president, does not believe the American people "are able to govern themselves."
"For 12 years," he added in a prepared text of a speech in Municipal auditorium, released by his campaign staff, "we have been governed by secrecy, subterfuge and wilful withholding of information. Our freedom is threatened by the insidious propaganda of the administration at Washington."
Says Reason For Alarm.
While conceding the right of government to withhold information involving military security, Bricker remarked, "there is reason for alarm when government officials secretly formulate international policy."
"No one knows," he continued, "how deeply the President of the United States has involved us in secret agreements secretly negotiated. For the most part, Casablanca, Cairo, Teheran and Quebec are only names on the map. What happened at those conferences in terms of international commitments remains for the future to reveal. Neither our people nor their elected representatives were permitted to consider and decide their future obligations."
The international conferences on food at Hot Springs, on war refugees at Bermuda, on monetary policies at Bretton Woods and on world security at Dumbarton Oaks were described by the Ohio governor as "star-chamber meetings about which the people of this country were given only glittering generalities."
