Full Text
If a man's not belonging to any particular sect, is now to be a reason for not placing him in office, we may before long expect to see a man elected because he belongs to this sect, or rejected because he belongs to that. Such a principle of action will corrupt both Church and State. Office-hunters will then join 'meeting' for the sake of political power, and religious assemblies will be converted into political cabals. The union of Church and State, whether effected by the intervention of the laws, or by the aid of party spirit, may make hypocrites, but it can never make Christians.
