BOWDOIN IVY DAY.
For First Time, Freshmen Win
the Class Race.
Waterville Votes to Hold a Series of
Merchants' Days.
Proposed Increased Facilities for Our
Maine Postal Service
Brunswick, May 28.-Ivy Day exercises
of the junior class, Bowdoin College, occurred
this afternoon in Memorial Hall
with music by the Salem Cadet band.
Following is the program: Prayer, O.
E. Hardy; Poem, L. A. Burleigh; Oration,
A. T. Brown. Presentations: Class Bellows,
bellows, R. Hunt; Tough Man,
pocket flask, E. H. Newbegin; Military
Man, sword, E. A. Thompson; Class
Wonder, wooden shoes, S. H. Erskine;
Conceited man, looking glass, T. S. Burr;
Popular Man, wooden spoon, F. O. Fish.
Planting the Ivy; Singing the Ode. The
class officers are: President, J. C. Jordan;
marshal, J. M. Hastings; poet, C. S. F.
Lincoln; curator, E. G. Loring; commit-
tee, B. D. Ridley, H. S. Chapman, E.
Hilton.
After the Ivy exercises occurred the
Seniors last chapel exercises. This evening
the Ivy hop was held in Town Hall.
The class race in the forenoon was won
by Freshmen crew.
The crews started well together, '92
taking the lead. '92 and '93 had to fight it
out.
Ninety-two led nearly all the way till near
the finish, when the Freshmen spurted and
held out till the end, winning by half a
length. Time, 8 min. 49½ sec.
1-mile course.
