SENATORIAL QUESTION.—Two ballots for U. S. Senator were taken in joint convention yesterday. On the last ballot General McDougall, the Douglas nominee, received 32 votes at the expense of Denver, Nugent et al. It was announced in the Union yesterday, semi-officially, that the Republicans had determined in caucus to cast their votes for McDougall, should he receive 34 votes. Had the Douglas members all been present and voted for their regular nominee, the requisite number would have been obtained, but forsooth, because they happen to have been absent, and if present, would have voted for some candidate most hostile to Republicans and probably to the Union, the Republican members still stand upon their dignity and refuse to accord him their vote. We cannot see how the Republican members can withhold their vote consistently and conscientiously from the prominent nominee under the circumstances. It is all-important that a sound Union man should be elected, and the election should have been made long since. With such a man the people will be content, whether he be one of the present nominees or not. The action of the Republicans seems factious, and tends to advance the interests of their bitterest enemies—possibly the election of one who is secretly in league with the Southern Confederacy. In this connection we might consistently ask Gen. Denver et al., who have studiously declined or neglected to give the people even an inkling of their views in regard to the great question of the day, how they can have the audacity to press themselves forward as candidates for the high and responsible office in question. They act as though they had some claim on the people of the State. Throw their services into one scale and the amount paid them out of the pockets of the people—into the other, and see which will kick the beam. If weighed they will be found wanting.—Sac. News.
