The House of Representatives Saturday adopted an amendment to the District appropriation bill, sponsored by Representative John Philip Hill, of Maryland, designating the new $5,000,000 bridge across the Potomac at Georgetown as the Francis Scott Key Bridge, in honor of the author of "The Star Spangled Banner."
Colonel Hill told the House that the Washington end of the new bridge, which is soon to be officially opened to traffic, abuts on the site of the home of Key at the time he wrote the national anthem, and that there is at present no monument or other memorial to Key in the nation's capital.
The amendment as adopted Saturday provides that the name shall be appropriately inscribed on either end of the structure, the cost of which is to be included in an item of $2,000 in the District bill for miscellaneous supplies incident to its maintenance.
