New-York, Aug. 23.—An express reached this city yesterday from Washington, requiring Capt. Porter, his officers, and such of the crew of the United States late frigate Essex as could be mustered, to repair immediately to that place, to aid in the defence thereof: in consequence of which the Court of Inquiry, which was to have assembled on board the President, is dissolved. Capt. Porter has been most assiduously employed in collecting his men together. He leaves town this day with a number of them, the residue will follow—tomorrow.

Capt. Porter, with 300 men, left N. York for Washington, on the 23d inst. The following is the animating summons which he issued, to collect his men:

To the Crew of the Old Essex.

SAILORS—The enemy is about attempting the destruction of your new ship at Washington, and I am ordered there to defend her. I shall proceed immediately, and all disposed to accompany me, will meet me at 5 o'clock, this afternoon, at the Navy Agent's Office.
