Well Said.
Ignoring the fact that all of the directors of the penitentiary are Democrats, the Readjuster Blair, in his speech last Monday at Harrisonburg, claimed that his party had made the penitentiary self-supporting, or nearly so. The increase in the number of the public schools for the year 1880-81 is also, he says, a Readjuster measure!— though the Readjusters had nothing to do with establishing the public schools that we have ever heard of. The Valley Virginian "sits down" on Mr. Blair as follows:
"He [Blair] stated that there were now fifteen furnaces in blast in Southwestern Virginia, where before there were but three, and claimed that it was the policy and the politics of the Readjusters which had encouraged capitalists to invest in them. Without knowing anything of the facts, we venture the assertion that every dollar of foreign capital placed in these furnaces is the money of Republicans, and that every man the money represents is opposed not only to the Riddleberger bill but to the Readjuster faction."
This latter is no doubt a true statement. We have never met with or heard of one of those men who have invested their money in railroads in Virginia who is a Readjuster. We don't believe there is a Readjuster in the Clarke syndicate that bought the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio road, nor in the Danville railroad syndicate, which controls fifteen hundred miles of railroad in the interests of Richmond, nor in the Chesapeake and Ohio Company, which has so blessed all of both Virginias, nor in the Richmond and Alleghany Railroad Company, which is now seeking to bind Ohio and Illinois to Virginia and to open a new railroad from the lakes to the Atlantic. Such men all discountenance and frown down repudiation in every form.
Richmond's manufacturers sell eighty millions of dollars' worth of their work every year.
How many of them are Readjusters?
