Nut Hunting

On Saturday a party of boys started for the woods for the purpose of hunting chestnuts. Some of them were quite fortunate and succeeded in getting a good supply, while others were less fortunate, and came off with torn and soiled clothing and, perhaps, a flogging from their fathers and a scolding from their mothers when they returned home. One little fellow presented quite a forlorn appearance, having lost his jacket, tore the crown out of his hat, and was nearly minus his pants—and was rewarded with no chestnuts. He sneaked in the house the back way, and was making his way up the stairs when his mother espied him, and mistook him for a young tramp. Imagine her surprise when she discovered him to be her own dear boy. An explanation was necessary, but this did not save the lad's tender feelings from his mother's wrath, and "Johnny" will not go chestnuting again in a hurry.
