The Hatchet Brigade

Old Guards in both the Democratic and the Republican parties are out to purge liberal Senators in the 1950 primaries, Director Jos. D. Keenan, of the AFL Labor's League For Political Education, recently charged in a public statement.

Every liberal Senator, be he Democrat or Republican, is getting opposition from the same place in the 1950 primary elections," Keenan said. "There is an attempted purge now going on in the primaries on both the Democratic and the Republican sides to remove liberals from office and to substitute 'conservative' candidates."

Keenan said Democratic targets for the hatchet men are Claude Pepper. Florida: Olin D. Johnston, South Carolina: Frank P. Graham, North Carolina; Lister Hill, Alabama and Russell B. Long, Louisiana, Democrats, and Republican Senators, Wayne Morse. Oregon: Chas. W. Tobey, New Hampshire and Geo. D. Aiken, Vermont.
