Joseph S. Caldwell, a former teacher and principal in the Prince Edward county school system, has been named superintendent of Powhatan County schools. C. R. Kennon Jr., school board chairman, announced selection to Supt. J. B. M. Carter today, following a board session Wednesday night. Mr. Carter reports to his new post in Nelson county October 6.
Caldwell, 49, is a Hampden-Sydney College graduate with an MA degree from Columbia University. Since 1952 he has been county superintendent at Spotsylvania, Va.
A native of Augusta county, Va., Caldwell was a teacher and athletic director at Farmville High School, from 1928 to 1931. From 1931 to 1942 he served as principal of Worsham-Henry High School at Charlotte C. H. and served there until 1947 when he was made superintendent of the Spotsylvania system.
Married with two sons, Caldwell has been active in civic work in the communities where he has served, particularly in Rotary and Ruritan organizations. He is an elder in the Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Carter, his predecessor at Powhatan, has been named Nelson county superintendent.
