Dillard Breaks Ground For New Science Bldg., To Cost $512,000
NEW ORLEANS Edgar B. Stern, President of the Board of Trustees at Dillard University, lifted the first spade of dirt on October 3 as the entire student body and faculty applauded in a ground breaking ceremony for a science building on the University campus.

Dr. Rivers Frederick, representing the alumni, Dr. Charles W. Buggs representing the faculty, and James Johnson, President of the Student Union also participated in the ground breaking ceremony.

President Albert W. Dent, who presided at the ceremony, stated that the building and equipment which will cost approximately $512,000 was made possible by an initial gift of $200,000 from the General Education Board of the Rockefeller Foundation and subsequent gifts of $100,000 each from Mr. and Mrs. Edgar B. Stern, The American Missionary Association of the Congregational Church and the Board of Education of The Methodist Church. Both church boards are sponsors of the University.

The University has heretofore placed emphasis upon instruction in the sciences as a general education discipline for all students and particularly for pre-medical and nursing students. The additional facilities will enable expansion in the science instruction now offered.

Four nationally prominent scientists were brought to the University as consultants to assure the most modern and effective use of building space and equipment, and the plans were reviewed in conference by science teachers from nine colleges.

The three-story building will be of reinforced concrete and brick and will be of modified georgian architecture in conformity with other buildings on the campus.
