So critical is the situation of the French forces in Italy, weakened by losses, in want of provisions, and neglected by the government, that no chance seems afforded them, either of opposing, successfully the enemy which surrounds them, or of getting off with safety. Thus circumstanced, the Directory, seemingly without regret, and without the shew of affording them assistance, leave a brave army to be sacrificed. Towards Switzerland, the new military measures are directed; where a formidable army is daily gaining strength, and where the hopes of the French are now chiefly placed.
