RANCHER MURDERED TO HIDE PETTY THEFT

San Jose, Cal., Aug. 7.—Deputy Sheriff Mulhall tonight made public the confession which he claims to have obtained from J. M. McFarland suspected of having murdered Manuel Garza. The story Mulhall gives is that McFarland secured employment on Garza's ranch after he had heard that Garza had a large amount of money hidden on the place. Monday morning while Garza was away from the house McFarland searched the place finding nine dollars.

As he was leaving the house he caught sight of Garza and fearing that the theft would be detected picked up a rifle and shot Garza. Then McFarland, it is said, picked up an axe and made sure that his victim was dead.
