RALEIGH—Most recent estimates as to ripening dates of the principal peach varieties grown in the Sandhills area of North Carolina are:

Golden Jubilee, July 1-10; Hiley, July 5-15; Georgia Belle, July 15-25; Elberta, July 20-30.

These dates are approximate and cover the period of time when the major portion of each of these varieties is expected to be available, according to George S. Abshier, marketing specialist, and George C. Klingbeil, horticultural specialist, both of State College Extension Service.

The specialists said quality and condition of all varieties appear excellent this year. Insect and disease damages are at a minimum. Weather conditions thus far have been very satisfactory for peaches.

Abshier and Klingbeil said they thought the North Carolina Mutual Peach Growers Society's new plan of self-regulation on quality and condition of peaches will prove highly beneficial to growers and consumers alike.

The regulations, adopted at a meeting at Candor late in June, include the following:

1. No peaches will be sold for local consumption having more than 5 per cent serious damage with the exception of ripeness. The principal causes of damage are worminess and brown rot.

2. No more than 3 per cent immature peaches may be included in any one container.

3. The top layer must be representative of the entire contents.

4. The place of business must be kept clean and sanitary.

Producers or roadside operators signing this agreement will be supplied with a seal of approval.
