We present our paper with what we hope is an improved appearance. We wish to make it worthy of the increased support we have received, and to bestow on sound principles, what they so well deserve, good type and paper and careful work.

We are for the Administration, or Jackson and his re-election, but the very motto we have selected exhibits our intended fairness in discussion, and pledges us to a discreet and manly moderation. Hear both sides, judge fairly, is all we ask from our opponents, and if what we ask were conceded, party anger would be abated, and political inquiry—without being virulent—might still be animated, and lead to beneficial results.

We have adverted to "sound principles," and our support of them: By "sound principles" we mean those derived from the Constitution. The first words of the Constitution are, "We THE People of the United States." They made by an overwhelming majority Gen. Jackson President of the United States, and is it to be permitted that faction, premature ambition, and indiscriminate opposition, are to frustrate their will, in the first place, by disquieting and calumniating the immediate administration of the Government, and in the second place distracting the country by the unseasonable pretensions of various conflicting desperate candidates for the succession.

Invoked by the spontaneous acclamations of a large majority of the people, the President has consented to be a candidate for re-election. Can any other man better secure the peace, the union, the security and prosperity of the country? This is a question as comprehensive as it is interesting, and gathering from various quarters information on this subject, impartially listening to the advocates of the various candidates, we hope with a moderation and impartiality derived from sincerity of conviction to do something in the support of our avowed opinion that in the present circumstances of the country, it behooves its interest and safety, to stand by the President, and to aid in his re-election.

By some mistake, the person who furnished us with the type for the head of our paper, sent the word "Newport" instead of "Rhode Island." We were compelled to use it for this publication, but shall replace the "R. I." in our next.

We have, at the urgent request of many of our patrons, altered our day of publication. The R. I. Republican will hereafter make its appearance on Tuesdays.
