While reckoning up the cost of the Philippine war, the following must not be overlooked: The Twenty-third infantry, which left San Francisco 1,300 strong, has just returned with only 760 names on the muster roll; the Thirty fourth, which went out 1,300 strong, brings back 801 men; from 100 to 150 men of each regiment were discharged in Manila. The remainder succumbing to disease and bullets. In the hold of the transport that carried the two regiments were the corpses of 250 soldiers who died in the Philippines since August 6, 1898: 741 killed, 472 died of wounds and accidents and 2,295 died of disease, making 3,508 deaths from all causes; also, 2,638 wounded, making a grand total of 6,146.
